John Ashby has supplied us with this lovely photo of a LNWR Jumbo
steam engine and
train at the Port Meadow crossing, circa 1920.
John points out that there is just visible a house over on Burgess Field. He tells me there are still some remains of buildings in the north west corner of Burgess Field, which was 10′ lower in the 1920's.
John also notes that from the shadow of the telegraph pole we can tell that the photo was taken early in the morning, and combining that with the particular track the train is on, and with reference to the timetable of the time, we can be fairly sure it is the early morning train from Verney Junction.
It looks like the allotment site already had some plots, and the odd shed, at that time. And my goodness, there's a platform! It really was a halt, where you could catch the train.
